Sort your clothes – Make sure that you’re just washing dark colored clothing, and that no light or white garments are hidden in the mix. This is a good general piece of advice but also applies to washing ties. Depending on the fabric of your tie, you can throw it in with another wash at the same temperature needed for your tie.

Use the right detergent –If you use a high quality detergent, such as Persil® ProClean® Original Scent Liquid Detergent, your tie will receive a thorough clean.

If in doubt, use the gentle cycle. Ties are sometimes made of a blend of fabrics, and you don’t want to ruin your favorite one by washing it too hot. Choose a setting that’s low temp, low spin, and use a protective washing bag.

How to wash a tie the right way

First and most importantly, you should decide whether your ties need a wash. You can wash ties in the washing machine, but it’s best to be on the safe side – double check the care label and use a gentle wash cycle. If you’re still worried about damaging your tie, learn how to hand wash a tie (see below!).

Top tip from our pros: If you’ve got stains on your tie, you can still use the gentle cycle if you effectively pre-treat the stain with Persil® ProClean® Stain Fighter. If you’re not sure how to remove specific types of stain, check out our helpful Stain Advisor.

How to wash a tie by hand

If you’ve got a tie that’s been hand embroidered, for example, even the gentle cycle on a machine could be too rough. Here’s how to hand wash a tie, in case you’re nervous about taking care of that delicate fabric – make sure you check the care label.

  • Select a gentle detergent suitable for delicate fabrics.
  • Get a bucket or basin (the sink would do, too!) and fill it with lukewarm water adding a small amount of detergent.
  • Allow the tie to soak for a bit – 20 minutes is more than enough.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water, and run the tie under cold water to rinse until no more soap bubbles appear in the water.
  • Hang out to dry.

Top Tip: Smoothing out your tie while wet will help prevent wrinkles forming.
